The Prevalence of online education

The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) conducted a distance education study based on the 2001-2002 academic year at 2-year and 4-year Title IV (Federal Student Aid)-eligible, degree-granting institutions. The study reported that 56 percent of all institutions surveyed offered distance education courses. The study also found that public institutions were more likely to offer distance education than were private institutions.
The Sloan Consortium, based on data collected from over 2,200 colleges and universities, reports that nearly 3.2 million students took at least one online course during 2005 (a significant increase over the 2.3 million reported in 2004). According to the same report, about two-thirds of the largest institutions have fully online programs.

Quality of Learning Online

Online education is a proven model for learning, with a lengthy track record. It enables accredited higher learning for individuals living with physical disabilities, busy working class people, soldiers and those living abroad, and stay at home parents to mention a few. There is fundamentally little difference between physically sitting in an auditorium listening to lectures versus watching a webcast video of the professor.
The recognition of the quality of online degrees compared to on-campus degrees varies. While most major online colleges are regionally accredited, the public perception of their quality is in dispute. Some experts argue that degrees in certain fields are more accepted online than in others, while some programs are less suited for online-only schools.
A survey by the Distance Education and Training Council found that 100 percent of employers who responded felt that distance education program graduates performed better on the job as a result of their degree (as compared to their previous performance). Additionally, employers felt that an employee receiving a distance education degree compared favorably, in terms of knowledge learned, to someone with a resident degree.] On the other hand, The Chronicle of Higher Education reported in January 2007 on a Vault Inc. survey that found 55 percent of employers preferred traditional degrees over online ones. 41%, however, said they would give "equal consideration to both types of degrees."
The Sloan Consortium, an organization funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to maintain and improve the quality of distance education, publishes regular reports on the state of distance education in the U.S. In its 2006 report "Making the Grade: Online Education in the United States, 2006," it stated that "in 2003, 57 percent of academic leaders rated the learning outcomes in online education as the same or superior to those in face-to-face. That number is now 62 percent, a small but noteworthy increase."
In some instances, an online degree may be no different than a degree earned in a campus-based program. The instruction is often exactly the same, and the online degree contains no special designation. An example of this is the degree offered to Columbia University students who earn a degree through the Columbia Video Network (CVN) versus the campus-based program.

What are Online Degrees?

What are Online Degrees?
The term online degrees refers to college degrees (sometimes including high school diplomas and non-degree certificate programs) that can be earned primarily or entirely through the use of an Internet-connected computer, rather than attending college in a traditional campus setting. Improvements in technology and the increasing use of the Internet worldwide have led to a proliferation of online colleges that award associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees.

Indian On Cabinet agenda today: Online degrees, certificates

A set of three education-related legislations will be on the Union Cabinet's agenda when it meets on Tuesday. This will include an ambitious proposal that will require all academic institutes right from schools to universities to preserve and confer degrees/certificates on students in the electronic format as well.

The National Academic Depository Bill proposes to create a national-level database of all academic certification and is projected as a major reform step that will cut through layers of attestation and inspection processes and crack down on fake degree rackets. It also means that every student, employer and institute will be able to take a print of a degree and check its veracity online — like a demat account. That apart, the ministry feels the move will help in maintenance of academic records and check problems like spoilage of certificates over time. It will also ease things for those seeking duplicate copies of their degrees.

What You Need to Know About Getting an Online Degree

Getting an online degree is a great way to get an education outside the traditional university system, and it's also a sound investment for your future career. It's an educational path that offers plenty of benefits, though because online degree programs are still relatively young, a lot of students aren't familiar with their structure or requirements. With that in mind, here are some thing you need to know about getting an online degree.
An online degree is designed to be attained entirely over the Internet (excluding, obviously, any relevant internships you might need to complete). You'll download coursework and exams by logging in to the school's network, which is also how you'll submit your work when it's finished. On top of this, most online degree programs are asynchronous, which means you don't have to log in at the same time as the rest of the students. There's no formal "class time," meaning it's completely up to you to decide when to study and what to focus on first, second, and so on. Aside from larger due dates for papers and exams, your schedule is your own. That's a much greater degree of flexibility than is offered in more traditional colleges and universities, which dictate when and where you have to be for every class. As a result, you're freer to plan your life and keep working at a full- or part-time job, something not always possible with brick-and-mortar educational institutions. On a technical note, though, you should be advised that your computer will need to meet certain technical specifications for online programs, so be sure to check with your school to see if your system is compatible.
You should also know that online degrees need to be accredited just like those offered at traditional schools, whether it's by a regional or national accrediting agency. Employers prefer to hire people with accredited degrees, so it's important that your online degree meets the necessary professional standards. The Department of Education as well as the Council for Higher Education Accreditation both maintain databases that will help you find an accredited program in your field of study.
Finally, it's a good idea to do your homework and see what people are saying about the school. Has anyone filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau about the school? What about current and former students? You should also talk to a financial counselor at the school to discuss bottom-line tuition costs as well as any technology fees that might be charged to you. Additionally, your academic counselors can help you figure out how long your degree will take to complete, which can vary if you're working.

Accreditation Facts for Online Degrees

An online degree offers education in the convenience of your own home, but sometimes it's possible to overlook one of the most aspects of online school: accreditation. In order to get a good education that will lead to a rewarding career, it's imperative that your online degree program be accredited.
The accreditation process is an important one for colleges and universities. It's the means by which schools are put through a rigorous quality check to ensure that their academic programs are legitimate and solid, and that they're actually schools and not just online "diploma mills" selling degrees for profit. While accreditation isn't performed directly by the government, they do monitor it. The U.S. Department of Education, as well as the non-governmental Council for Higher Education Accreditation, keep track of accrediting agencies and which schools have passed muster, and their databases are invaluable tools in helping you weed through the online degree programs out there to find out which ones are really worth it. The bottom line is simple: Your online degree needs to come from an accredited outlet.
Those databases will help you sort through more than 7,000 schools and 18,000 degree programs recognized by the CHEA, Department of Education, or both. During this process, you'll come across different types of accreditation: regional and national. As you'd expect, one type of agency focuses on schools in a specific part of the country, while the other works with schools nationwide. There's a small caveat here, though. While there's no real educational difference between the two -- you'll be able to get a quality degree at both types of places -- it's typically easier to study with an online institution that's been regionally accredited as opposed to nationally. The primary reason for this is that it's usually easier to transfer credits among regionally accredited universities and from a regionally to a nationally approved school; if you want to change schools and go from a nationally to a regionally accredited one, it might be tougher to transfer some or all of your credits. It's something to consider if you envision needing or wanting to change schools or transfer course credits before you've completed earning your degree.
You should also investigate your degree plan before enrolling in an online institution to see if your eventual career requires any additional organizational accreditation. For instance, students studying to become surgical technicians need to find schools that have been accredited by groups like the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs and the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools so they can take the career certification exam after graduation. This is an important extra step, though not every major requires this specific kind of accreditation. Check with your school's advisors to see if it affects you. No matter what or where you study, it needs to be accredited.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics has predicted which occupations will grow the fastest through 2018, and you can find great online degree programs to take you toward these careers:

  • Biomedical engineers: A biomedical engineer combines principles of technical design and human physiology to design health systems and products. • Skin care specialists: A skin care specialist provides treatments designed to improve a client's skin health. You can usually get into the field with an associate's degree or even certificate, though you'll also need to be licensed by the state. It's expected that skin care specialists will grow by 38%, or 14,700 jobs.
  • Biochemists and biophysicists: An online degree in chemistry or biology is a smart way to begin a career as a scientist devoted to studying the chemical and physical properties of living organisms. The field anticipates a 37% growth through 2018, adding 8,700 jobs.
  • Athletic trainers: Not to be confused with personal trainers, athletic trainers prevent and treat injuries and work as health professionals with a variety of clients. It's predicted that the occupation will grow 37% (6,000 jobs) through the next few years, and students who hope to enter the field major in areas including anatomy, physiology, and nutrition.
